with Paris Troika at The Blue Note

09.11.10 |12:30 a.m.

PARIS TROIKA is the collective pseudonym for musicians Misha Piatigorsky, Buster Hemphill, and Chris Wabich, who have coalesced around a particular concept of trio playing: classic rock tunes as vehicles for improvisation and new harmonic possibilities, as well as further exploring the classicism implicit in much of rock music. Add to this a strong sense of the blues, a critical element of rock as well as in the individual jazz approaches of these three musicians, and what results is indeed a “power trio". Paris Troika also draws from Piatigorsky’s catalog of award-winning compositions, and is often accompanied in performance by a string trio.

George Manahan, Guest Conductor

Ravel, Le Tombeau de Couperin;
Adams, Shaker Loops;
Barber, Capricorn Concerto;
Stravinsky, Pulcinella Suite

These modern works reinvent earlier musical forms with a fresh palette of tonalities particular to each composer: Samuel Barber and Maurice Ravel paying homage to the Baroque suite; John Adams' embrace of ritual dance; Igor Stravinsky's ballet score that reinvents an 18th century form. This program of sheer brilliance is brought to life by guest conductor George Manahan. Known to area audiences as Music Director of the New York City Opera, Maestro Manahan has conducted the Santa Fe, Glimmerglass and Lyric Opera companies, and the San Francisco, Atlanta, Seattle, Minnesota, Jerusalem, and National Symphony orchestras, among many others.

Film: "Music and Lyrics" coming soon to a theater near you....

This film is supposed to be released on Valentine's Day in 2007 (or so they tell me). My three and a half minutes of fame connected to it is that I'll be heard with my friends Kiku and Janey playing the string parts for the song "Way Back into Love". Here's what I know about it so far: Starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, a washed up singer (Grant) is given a couple days to compose a chart-topping hit for an admiring teen sensation. Though he's never written lyrics in his life, he sparks with an offbeat younger woman (Barrymore) with a flair for words.
